This week the Leaseweb offices have seemed more like a bakery, with home-baked Indonesian cakes, biscuits and treats being served to colleagues, co-workers and company friends. It’s all in the name of a good cause called Sukaria. Leaseweb is supporting Sukaria, a charity founded by one of its Customer Support Engineer, Janice Ritzer. The Sukaria project aims to raise funds, food and clothing for the children of the Mollucan Islands, Indonesia.
Sukaria began when Pascal and Brenda first visited the Moluccan Islands near Indonesia. On the islands, which suffer regular bouts of religious warfare, while government and international funding in the small villages allows the children of the Island to go to school and provides them with church clothes for Sundays, there is little money left for anything else, which means many of them go without toys or safe places to play. Pascal and Brenda wanted to do something to help bring more happiness into these children’s lives, and thus Sukaria was created.
Sukaria means ‘pleasure’, which is what the fund aims to bring to the young children of the Moluccan Islands.
Now, a year later, the fund has official charity status and is raising money every day, through volunteers, donations and fundraising events like Leaseweb’s Indonesian cake sale. The money raised this week will go towards building a playground on the field between two small villages, Samasuru and Elpaputih, for the younger children to enjoy. Sukaria has also gained support and help through blogs, Twitter and Facebook, and are able to send second-hand toys, games and clothes for the children donated by their supporters.
