7 Advantages of Colocation Vs. On Premise Hosting

ColocationCustomers who are looking for a hosting solution, particularly those who currently have an on premise hosted IT environment and are considering colocation, often face a range of questions with regard to their infrastructure choices. We’ve put together a list of some of the common issues companies face when deciding between colocation and on premise hosting to help make it easier to choose between the two solutions.

In many cases, colocation offers several advantages in terms of IT management and business continuity. A hosted solution provides the benefit of the experience, knowledge and resources of the hosting provider. Additionally, the costs of running a datacenter on premises are usually high, and often will not show a return on investment unless a company can reach the necessary scale. Because of these factors, colocation is often an attractive option for many businesses.

Let’s look at some of the advantages of colocation in more detail:

1. Availability

In a hosted environment, the hosting provider takes the necessary precautions to ensure your data is available at all times. There are emergency services available in case of a power outage, such as power supplies, batteries, and generators (plus fuel, a supplier contract for fuel, and an SLA for refuelling). Fall-back scenarios are tested regularly to make sure these measures do not fail at crucial moments.

Hosting providers also have additional arrangements in place with an energy supplier for redundant energy connections that enter the building at different locations. Redundant Internet connections (that also enter the premise at different locations) and an agreement with the local authorities for possible excavation work (that could damage cables) are also standard.

Protecting patient data with LeaseWeb

In secure a study released this week by the Ponemon Institute, a U.S. privacy research group, almost 90 percent of surveyed healthcare organizations reported they had at least one data breach involving patient data in the last two years; 45 percent reported more than five breaches.

Healthcare records are a prime target for hackers because they are such a rich source of information. Stolen credit card numbers expire quickly once the patterns of misuse are discovered. Personal identity information is far more persistent.

Safe Harbor invalidation not affecting LeaseWeb customers

In October last year, the US Safe Harbor regime was invalidated by Europe’s Court of Justice, meaning that personal data of Europeans could no longer be transferred by a company to US companies solely on the basis of such companies being Safe Harbor-certified.

Alternative Solutions

At the time of the ruling, no replacement for the Safe Harbor principle was proposed. The European Commission gave itself a 3-months term to come up with an alternative solution, working towards January 31, 2016. It is not likely that this timeline will be met but we expect new developments to be made public in the coming weeks.

The Netherlands – land of data centers

A guest blog by Michiel Steltman, Director of the DHPA (Dutch Hosting Provider Association).

When you would ask an average EU citizen how the Internet works and where most websites and cloud services are hosted, most people will mention the U.S. as the main source of Internet technologies and services. And when you would ask an EU politician about the Internet, his or her first emerging thought would be a concern about taps, privacy, or cybercrime.

How to migrate 3000 servers in 3 nights

Have you seen our latest video? In late December last year, we finally completed the relocation into our new data center space in Northern Virginia. While prepping for the work, we decided to film the whole process, showing how we migrated 3000 servers in 3 days:

One of our company values is transparency, so there was no hesitation when we thought of allowing a crew to film a “behind-the-scenes” video of our relocation project. It would showcase our work processes, our technology, and most of all, the dedication of our team. It was exciting to capture on film the commitment of our engineers working on this project day and night, in perfect synergy to ensure a successful transition.
